Spain Named the World’s Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Travel Destination in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025

Spain Named the World’s Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Travel Destination in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025

Spain has claimed the top position in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025, an annual report published by LGBTQ+ magazine Spartacus that evaluates the legal and social conditions for LGBTQ+ individuals across 216 countries and regions. Presented this year in collaboration with Booking.com and its inclusive Travel Proud program, the index reinforces Spain’s reputation as a global leader in LGBTQ+ rights and a premier destination for inclusive travel. Joining Spain at the top of the index are other equality-driven nations such as Canada, Iceland, Malta, and Portugal. The ranking is based on 18 criteria that assess both positive and negative factors impacting the LGBTQ+ community—from marriage equality and adoption rights to the existence of anti-discrimination legislation and the legality of gender-affirming policies. Spain’s leading position reflects its comprehensive legal framework and progressive stance on LGBTQ+ issues. The country stands out for ensuring equal age of consent, banning conversion therapies, recognizing intersex identities, and supporting LGBTQ+ visibility through inclusive marketing and public policies. In addition to its strong legal protections, Spain is also home to a growing calendar of major LGBTQ+ events. In 2026, the vibrant Mediterranean city of Valencia will host both the Gay Games—one of the world’s largest inclusive sporting and cultural events—and the IGLTA Global Convention, the premier gathering of LGBTQ+ travel professionals. These international events further underscore Spain’s commitment to creating a welcoming, affirming space for LGBTQ+ travelers from around the globe. For LGBTQ+ travelers seeking a safe, inclusive, and dynamic experience, Spain remains a destination of choice in 2025 and beyond.
